On April 22, 2021, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued an announcement letter to inform Energy Star partners and stakeholders that draft 2 of television Energy Star 9.0 has been released, including amendments to draft 1. EPA held another webinar on May 11, 2021, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. EST, to discuss the details of draft 2. Feedback on draft 2 can be sent to the official email televisions@energystar.gov The deadline is June 3, 2021.
Since the release of draft 9.0 version 1, EPA has started to develop cta-2037c (determination of TV power consumption and average brightness test method) together with CTA. Therefore, once the working group continues to push forward the final version of cta-2037c, cta-2037c will be used in TV version 9.0. This will allow energy star to coordinate with the industry's testing methods, thereby reducing the hassle of additional testing methods.
Compared with 9.0 draft 1, draft 2 has been updated as follows:
● Delete the definition of download acquisition mode (dam);
● There are three definitions of special functions: automatic brightness control (ABC), motion based dynamic dimming (MDD) and high contrast ratio (HCR) display;
● The energy efficiency requirement of on mode is changed from the requirement of three states (default, brightest, and default hdr10) to the requirement of evaluating the average value of the three states;
● For network TV, the power consumption limit of active standby low power mode is reduced from 2W to 1W;
● Delete the energy efficiency requirements of download acquisition mode (dam);
● Add cta-2037c test method.
Test Method | Requirements | Applicability |
Uniform Test Method for Measuring the Energy Consumption of Television Sets incorporated in Appendix H to Subpart B of 10 CFR Part 430 | Report measured AEC and power consumption in On, Standby-Active, Low, and Off Modes | Reporting requirement |
CTA-2037C: Determination of Television Set Power Consumption and Average Luminance | Test and report Standby-Passive Mode (3.4.1) | Test to determine ENERGY STAR Certification* |
Test and report On Mode(Section 3.3) and Standby-Active, Low (Section 3.4.2)Power |
● Version 9.0 is still in the draft stage and its effective date is yet to be determined.
