What is LFGB?

LFGB, the full name of which is the “German Food, Tobacco Products, Cosmetics and Household Goods Regulation,” represents the highest level of legal requirements in Germany regarding materials in contact with food. It is considered the strictest and most authoritative safety standard in the European Union market. If a product passes the LFGB testing, it indicates that it does not contain any harmful substances and can safely come into contact with food. Thus, it serves as an important “access credential” for entering the German market, as well as the entire European Union market.

Why undergo LFGB testing?

Many manufacturers and sellers are only aware of the need to comply with FDA regulations or the EU’s 1935/2004 directive, but they are not aware that Germany’s “Food, Tobacco Products, Cosmetics and Other Consumer Goods Regulation” (LFGB) represents the strictest implementation of the “Article 206” requirements within the EU. This regulation not only tests for heavy metals and plasticizers but also conducts specific migration tests for each type of material; for example, silicone products are tested for volatile organic compounds, while wooden products are tested for pentachlorophenol. Without an LFGB certificate, German customs has the right to reject the product outright.
