By analyzing the recall information of toy products in European Commission Safety Gate and Communicorp Recalls of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in the past three years, it is found that the defects of plush toys mainly involve segmentation, suffocation, cuts and chemical injuries. The following are two typical case studies of recalls.

1. Small parts (the tabs, the glue fragments from the dress sheets, the springs and the speaker from the sound mechanism, the button, the circuit board) can easily be detached from the toy. A small child may put them into the mouth and choke.
2. The speaker from the sound mechanism contains a small magnet with a high magnetic flux. If a child swallows the small magnet and other metallic objects, they could attract one another causing intestinal blockage or perforation.
3. The housing of the sound mechanism can be easily opened and the metallic connections of the batteries generates sharp edges which could cause cuts.
4. The fibrous stuffing material is easily accessible due to the weakness of certain seams. A small child may put the stuffing material in the mouth and choke on it.
The product does not comply with the requirements of the Toy Safety Directive and the relevant European standard EN 71-1.
1. Manufacturers in the selection of soft stuffed toys wash labels, should use non-tear fabric, sewing in soft stuffed dolls should use thicker sewing thread, and sewing several times, can avoid being pulled down the possibility of small parts, or use breathable fabric. Decorations on clothing should be fixed in a stitched form, avoiding glue.
2. The speaker device shall be installed inside the soft stuffed doll and the sewing thread of the filling material shall be strengthened to avoid being pulled apart.

The buttons on the lab coat worn by the Doctor Duck contain levels of lead that exceed the federal lead content standard. According to Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) and Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Toy Safety ASTM F963-17, Lead(Pb) content in substrate materials must not exceed 100ppm, Lead(Pb) content in paint and other similar surface coatings must not exceed 90ppm.
GIG recommends that relevant toy production companies, in addition to focusing on product mechanical and physical issues, also need to pay attention to chemical risks in the product, such as Lead content and Phthalate content, and adjust production processes in time to avoid risks.
